3. The Team Win
During the 2002 Austrian Grand Prix qualifying laps, Ferrari’s Rubens Barrichello managed to snag pole position. His teammate Michael Schumacher ended up in the third position. Once the race started, Barrichello remained in the lead until the last lap, with Schumacher in second place. As the race was drawing to the end, Barrichello received orders from the pit to let Schumacher pass.
Ferrari was eager to get their start driver the maximum amount of points and secure the championship. Reluctantly and under threats, Barrichello caved in and let Schumacher overtake him, leading to a bizarre trophy-awarding ceremony and a fine of $1 million for Ferrari. Formula One changed the rules after that races, making it illegal for teams to give such orders to their drivers.
