The BMW X5 is making its debut, but we will not talk about this model. Instead, we want to take a look at the next-generation X6, which is the X5 in its core with one major difference – a coupe-style roof. The ongoing BMW X6 has been sold for three years now, which means that the next generation is going to hit the market after 2020.
However, the German manufacturer isn’t wasting any time and they are already assembling the new model. The prototype has already been caught on camera and here is what we know about this car so far.
Spy Photos
The vehicle is still heavily camouflaged, but that doesn’t prevent us to take a peek. The BMW X6 will take the design cues from the X4 and the X5 as well. At the front, the large kidney grille dominates whereas the headlights are sleek. Between the wheel arches and below the slated belt line, the design features are subdued, something similar you can see on the X4.
At the rear end, it appears as if we are looking at the model created by Mercedes. It is widely known that the X4 borrowed a bunch of design parts from the rivalry company and a lot of it will be translated to the next generation X6. The 2019 BMW X6 will be underpinned with the same platform that supports the X5 and the engine line is expected to remain the same. What this means is that the entry-level model is going to sport an I6 unit good for 340 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque.
2019 BMW X6 Engines
If you want to go with the top-dog car, you should know that it packs a monstrous V8 good for 462 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. As for the diesel variant, the BMW X6 will offer the 30d trim that produces 265 ponies and 457 lb-ft of torque, whereas the 50d sits at the top and delivers 400 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque. Just like it is the case with the X5, the transmission that will be used for all of the engines is an eight-speed automatic.
Interior
We have seen the spy photos and have a pretty good idea of what the new X6 is going to look from the outside. Unfortunately, the cameras didn’t manage to snap a few shots of the interior. Either way, we are sure that the BMW is going to carry over almost 100% percent of the X5’s cabin.
With that being said, we believe that the dashboard is going to be smooth with the digital instrument cluster which will be among standard equipment. The center console will be made from one piece and the only changes we expect inside are at the rear bench. Because of the sloped roof, the headroom for the rear passengers is going to reduce slightly and there will be no third row of seats.
Moreover, where the new X5 surprised negatively is cargo room, which had to be decreased due to the design. Although BMW’s initial press release suggested more cargo space at first, a significant drop in trunk space disappointed the potential customers. We are not saying this will happen with the new X6, but the possibility exists.
2019 BMW X6 Pricing
Considering that the next-generation BMW X6 brings in new technology and that it will not come out in the next two years, the increase in price is certain. The ongoing model starts at $62,950 for the base trim and it stretches to $77,000 for the top-shelf. The X6M, for instance, is sold for $105,000. The best case scenario is to see a rise in the starting price of about $1,000.
