Cadillac faced the harsh truth a few years ago – they admitted that they were falling behind the competition in the premium market. To changed that they brought a new name to the team – Johan de Nysschen. He created a new strategy for the American carmaker, and that plan included created of the new models such as the CT6, XT5 and the XT4.
The last one is a small crossover that is going to compete against the likes of the BMW X3, Audi Q5, and the Mercedes-Benz GLC. The 2019 Cadillac XT4 debuted at the 2018 New York Auto Show and here is what it offers.
2019 Cadillac XT4 Exterior
As expected and as it is confirmed by the spy photos, the new XT4 is based on the XT5 at least in terms of design. The similar headlamps are features with the vertical DRLs. The front is dominated by a large trapezoidal grille and the sturdy bumper. Overall, the exterior of the new Cadillac XT4 combines the rugged appearance with sporty details. However, the XT4 didn’t just look at the XT5 for the inspiration. The designers also took some details from the CT6 sedan. If you look at the side intakes, the vertical LED strips, and the engine hood, you will see the similarities.
On the sides, the XT4 boasts a more subdued appearance, it doesn’t have a proper quarter window, and this is something you will not see on other crossovers. But the sporty nature of this car is what is needed if Cadillac wants to compete with the best on the market. The rear end also blends the new design cues with the ones of the XT5. Interestingly enough, there is no chrome on the rear fascia, which is another thing that makes this model stand out.
Interior
The similar story is inside the car. A few familiar features can be seen, but there are enough styling elements to make it unique. The dashboard is cleverly designed and with the multi-tier appearance, it immediately draws attention. The new eight-inch infotainment display is installed in the central piece whereas the horizontal A/C vents are on the lower fascia at the corners.
You can also see the A/C vents above the infotainment screen, and they are bigger than the ones on the sides. Meanwhile, the three-spoke steering wheel is brand new, wrapped in leather and featuring big grip handles at 10 and 2 o’clock.
The buyers can choose whether they will have a massage feature on the sporty seats which are covered in leather. The ambient light is offered too. Speaking of technology, the new infotainment system has an intuitive interface, fast response and better voice recognition than before. Four USB ports and a 15-watt wireless charging pad are also among the standard tech.
Drivetrain
Even though the 2019 Cadillac XT4 took after the XT5, there are major differences under the bonnet. The new model is equipped with a small 2.0-liter I4 turbocharged engine that uses Active Fuel Management that improves fuel economy as much as possible. The unit delivers 237 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, which is more than enough to tackle the Mercedes Benz GLC and the BMW X3 in the States.
The engine is combined with a nine-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels. However, if you are not satisfied with this one, Cadillac offers a twin-clutch as an option as well as things such as Active Sport Suspension with Continuous Damping Control. This vehicle is the first Cadillac with electro-hydraulic braking assist.
