2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt – First Drive Analysis

There are much better car movies than Bullitt. In this melodramatic piece of kitsch, the audience followed Frank Bullitt, who was portrayed by Steve McQueen. The story takes place in San Francisco, but the ending of the film is forgettable that even after you watched it several times, you might struggle to remember the final scene.

Steve McQueen’s career was a rich one, and he had some fantastic movies such as The Great Escape, The Thomas Crowne Affair and The Magnificent Seven. Bullitt was not one of the great films. It could have been a total disaster had it not been for almost 11 minutes of the iconic scene that changed cinema.

Exterior

The 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt comes with the Highland Green paint, which looks outstanding on the refreshed sixth-generation Mustang’s coupe body. The Bullitt has been driven in San Francisco under the foggy sky, and the menace of McQueen’s character has been portrayed perfectly.

Of course, this model is different from the original in numerous aspects. For instance, the new black 19-inch wheels, which look really cool, bear only a passing resemblance to the Torq-Thrust alloys that the GT390 featured in the movie. Red Brembo brake calipers are installed behind the wheels, and they arrest the car well when at high speed.

On the other hand, some parts from the original car that were not used in the first and second model are featured now. We are not sure whether this was a good idea or not. For instance, the vehicle comes with chrome surrounds on the grille and greenhouse, but they don’t fit well with the subtle look of the car.

2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt Drive

First of all, you should know that the Bullitt can go as fast as 163 mph thanks to the engine that produces 480 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful non-Shelby Mustang on the market. When it comes to the engine, Ford decided to use a 5.0-liter V8 for this one, connecting it to a six-speed manual shifter. Magnetic dampers remain on the list of options.

Don’t expect the improved dynamics on the new Bullitt. It is the vehicle which marks 50 years of the film, and it should make you feel a certain way – nostalgic, cool or evoke some other feelings. And when it comes to that, there is no better car than this one. The exhaust system sounds great, but pops and burbles and bangs on overrun are normal when we are talking about the Bullitt. No automatic transmission is offered. Mustang Chief Engineer Carl Wildmann said: “An automatic doesn’t really fit the character of the car,” and he is right.
